The Chateau and Yaldara
Our home is the iconic Chateau Yaldara, near the southern Barossa town of Lyndoch.
Hermann Thumm founded Yaldara in 1947 after he was released from an Australian intern camp. He was sent to Australia as the result of World war Two.
Hermann chose the site for the winery on the banks of the North Para River at an old flax mill that was built in the mid 1800s. Hermann built the now amazing estate in and around the old flax mill, using as much recycled or second hand materials as possible.
The winery was named ‘Yaldara’ after the local Aboriginal word meaning ‘sparkling’ a nod to the the flowing river and Hermann's love, history and connection to sparkling wine.
Hermann's estate grew over the coming years to include the Chateau that was completed in 1967. The building was originally used to house a collection of antiques. The public could view the collection in the Chateau and do a wine tasting in the old mill. Later Hermann built a sister Chateau, a function centre ( no known as the manor house) and a restaurant ( now Lyndoch hill)
Today, we keep his vision alive with estate grown, hand-crafted wines.
